Gun or air pistol – how to spot a fake

Police didn't know it at the time but shots fired at officer during a chase Saturday in Saskatoon were from an air gun.

I'm not sure that the police should try to identify the difference. If they misidentify they are facing life or death consequences for themselves and potentially other victims. I think if it looks like a gun it should be treated as a live firearm. If people are stupid enough to point an air gun at police then they kind of deserve whatever happens.
